Mini cruises in Languedoc-Roussillon

Pierre Paul RiquetCanal du RhôneCanal du Midi - Ecluse

Canal du Midi THE CANAL Du MIDI
To go through Languedoc in the course of water is surely one of the most pleasant way to perceive the charm and the relaxed rhythm of life of this region. Classified in the world patrimony of the UNESCO, the famous Pierre Paul Riquet's work crosses the most beautiful landscapes from Toulouse to Sete.

THE CANAL DU RHONE IN SETE
The Canal du Rhône in SèteThis canal, firstly named the canal of the ponds, is the logical continuation of the canal du midi. By going from west to east, one leaves the Rhone at the level of Beaucaire and, going through Bellegarde, one arrives in Saint Gilles du Gard. By joining the Camargue, here we are next to the Aigues Mortes' ramparts. From there, not far from the beaches and the sea resorts of la Grande Motte, Carnon and Palavas, one heads to Mauguio, the former county of Melgueil which gave birth to Montpellier.

Canal de la Robine THE CANAL DE LA ROBINE
The Robine of Narbonne was the former arm of the Aude, abandonned by the river since the antiquity. Around 1686, in front of the commercial importance of the Royal Canal (which became the Canal du Midi at the Revolution period), works began to midify the bed of the Robine river in order to join Narbonne to the Canal. The river bed of the Robine was modified until Gailhousty and locks were built to join the current bed of the Aude river. En 1776, a junction canal was dug, which passed through Salleles of Aude, and connects today the Canal du Midi to the Aude river. The set Robine-Junction Canal includes nine locks, and the Gailhousty overflow, which aim is to fill Capestang's pond with the Aude flood's silt.

AIGUES MORTES
CamargueAigues Mortes' harbour is in the center of the river system connecting the Rhone river to the Canal du Midi. The harbour, situated along the ramparts, allows stopping of boats and penichettes rental. Stop and discover the fauna and flora of Camargue (pink flamingos, herons, aigrettes, rice fields, roselieres) or stop in one of the numerous bull herd to watch the herdsmen's work in their natural environment.
